It has been almost a year since Ada Hegerberg wrote history as the first female player to be awarded the Ballon d'Or - the award that goes to the world's best football player every year.

Tonight it's time again. But this time, on the other hand, few, if any, believe the 24-year-old as the winner despite her Lyon winning both the French league and the Champions League again.

Hegerberg missed the summer World Cup finals in France after an infected conflict with the Norwegian Football Federation. It must lie in the barrel because a successful World Cup is historically a victory recipe that usually goes a long way with the jury, consisting of journalists from all over the world.

There are players that France's Zinedine Zidane (1998 winner), Brazil's Ronaldo (2002) and Italy's Fabio Cannavaro (2006) proof. All three were awarded the prize after winning the World Cup. Also last year's winner on the men's side Luka Modric received the award after piloting her Croatia to the World Cup final 2018 where the nation fell to France.

Looking at Rapinoe

For Sweden, the World Cup in France was a great success, finishing with a third place - but not even that will suffice for anyone from the Swedish trio Fischer, Asllani or Jakobsson to receive the prize if you believe in the advance tips.

Instead, all eyes are on Megan Rapinoe.

As the team captain, Rapinoe guided his USA this summer to the nation's second straight World Cup gold and won the tournament's six goals with his six goals. She was awarded the Gold Ball as the tournament's best player and was named Player of the Year by the International Football Association, Fifa.

But the 34-year-old has also received a lot of attention for his involvement alongside the plan. She describes herself as a walking protest because of her strong legal pathos and during the year has struggled with US President Donald Trump, raising LGBTQ issues and fighting for equal pay.

"Favorite"

-Rapinoe is a woman I admire. She has her vision and wants to get her message out, which we should all be inspired by, ”Ada Hegerberg recently told the British Daily Mail.

England's Lucy Bronze is also nominated, but like many others believe in the American.

-He obviously does a lot off the field, but Rapinoe was also the United States' best player in the World Cup. She had a couple of really good matches and is the favorite, Bronze told Sporting News last week.

On the men's side there is no world championship to take into account and the discussion is so often about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The duo took home the award ten years in a row before Luka Modric broke their dominance last year.

But besides Messi and Ronaldo, Virgil van Dijk has also stepped up as a heavy candidate this year. The midback was an important cog in the Liverpool that won the Champions League last spring.

-If you hand out the Ballon d'Or to this generation's best players, it should always go to Lionel Messi. That's it, Jürgen Klopp said, according to the AFP news agency.

-But if you give the prize to the player who was the best last season it should be Virgil van Dijk. That's how I see it, the Liverpool coach continued.
