Mathieu van der Poel, Max Verstappen and Virgil van Dijk have been nominated for the Sportman of the Year prize. Among the women, the Jaap Eden Award goes to Suzanne Schulting - last year's winner - Sifan Hassan or Annemiek van Vleuten.
The NOS and sports umbrella NOC * NSF made the nominations for the Sportgala public on Sunday.
Van der Poel seems to be the favorite for the Jaap Eden for Sportsman of the Year. The 24-year-old rider became cyclocross world champion, won the European Championship title on mountain bike and impressed on the road with, among other things, the victory in the Amstel Gold Race.
Van Dijk (28) won the Champions League with Liverpool and, as captain of the Orange, reached the final of the Nations League. Moreover, the Dutch national team qualified for next year's European Championship.
The 22-year-old Verstappen was the first Dutchman to finish in third place in the Formula 1 World Cup standings. The Red Bull Racing driver, who had already been named Sportsman of the Year in 2016, won three Grands Prix this year.
Hassan (26) was the star of the World Championships in Doha with a unique double: gold at 1,500 meters and 10,000 meters. Schulting (22) became the first Dutch short track star to become world champion and Van Vleuten (37) won the World Championship on the road after an impressive solo of over 100 kilometers.

Two football teams with nominations for the Sports Team
There are four nominees in the Sports Team of the Year category. Football is well represented with Ajax and the Orange Women. The team sprinters at the track cycling - who won last year - and the rowers of the doubles (men) also have a chance.
Wheelchair tennis player Diede de Groot, para-skier Jeroen Kampschreur and para-cyclist and para-triathlete Jetze Plat are the nominations for the Paralympic Athlete of the Year prize.
The Jaap Eden for Coach of the Year goes to Ajax trainer Erik ten Hag, national coach Sarina Wiegman (Oranjevrouwen) or Hugo Haak, the coach of the successful sprinters in track cycling.

Nuis and Schulting won prizes last year
NOS and sports umbrella NOC * NSF already announced the shortlists last week with the contenders for the Jaap Eden Awards. A professional jury composed the nominations from these lists.
The prizes are for performances between December 1, 2018 and November 30, 2019. The winners will be announced at the Sportgala, which will be held on Wednesday December 18 in AFAS Live in Amsterdam and where the athletes and coaches present can cast their votes. The result of that vote counts for 50 percent, the vote of the professional jury is responsible for the other 50 percent.
This year's professional jury consists of chairman Bas van de Goor and members Fred Buddenberg, Foppe de Haan, Marc Lammers, Ralf van der Rijst, Marije Smits, Marianne Timmer, Maarten van der Weijden and Ewoud van Winsen.
Last year the Jaap Eden Awards went to Schulting (Sportswoman), skater Kjeld Nuis (Sportsman), snowboard star Bibian Mentel (Paralympic), Jac Orie and Raemon Sluiter (Coach) and the team sprint at the track cycling (Sports team). Footballer Matthijs de Ligt was named Talent of the Year.
