Spain beat Canada to win their sixth Davis Cup title on Sunday after Roberto Bautista Agut beat Felix Auger Aliyasim 7-6 6-3 and Rafael Nadal beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3 7-6.

Bautista won the first set against Eliasim in 54 minutes and ended 7-6 (7-3).

After that, he advanced 3-0 in the second set, and although Aliyasim fought back, Bautista won the second set 6-3 to give Spain a 1-0 lead.

The win paved the way for Nadal, who has not lost a Davis Cup singles match since 2004, giving Spain their first title since 2012.

"It was a fun week. A lot of things happened, but Roberto was the key to playing for us today," Nadal said.

"He had to leave the team. His father died. He returned and trained and then won today. The fans were amazing and we want to thank Madrid and Spain for this."

Spain's win was particularly striking for Bautista, who pulled out of the team last Thursday after receiving news of his father's health deteriorating.

The Spanish Tennis Federation confirmed their deep sorrow at the player's father's death on Thursday.

"It was very difficult, the whole team is with him, and we will give him maximum support," said Spain coach Sergei Bruguiere.
