The French team, beaten by Serbia this Thursday, November 21 in Madrid, is eliminated from the 2019 Davis Cup tennis. The Blues, finalists of the last edition, leave the competition in the group phase. They are not among the best second-rounders, qualified for the quarter-finals.

The two finalists of the 2018 Davis Cup have been trapped since the group stage in 2019. Croatia, defending champion, and France will not even see the quarterfinals of this competition which has completely changed formula.

The Davis Cup is now playing in one city (Madrid) for a week and involves 18 national teams, divided into six groups of three. To qualify for the quarterfinals, the French team had to finish first in their pool or among the two best second.

Pair swept by Djokovic

An equation a priori easy to solve for the winner of the 2017 edition, then finalist in 2018. But the Blues have complicated the task, Tuesday, November 19, beating hard the modest team of Japan, deprived of Kei Nishikori, 13th player worldwide (2-1). Blame this surprising defeat of Gael Monfils against Yoshihito Nishioka. The Herbert-Mahut pair then brought the decisive point to France.

This Thursday, November 21, the men of Sebastien Grosjean had to beat Serbia to clinch their ticket to the quarter-finals. But after Monfils Tuesday, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was disappointed losing the first single against Filip Krajinovic, 40th at ATP (7-5, 7-6).
