Desiree van Lunteren (26) will stop after eight years as international of the Orange Women, the KNVB announced on Thursday.
"I would be short of myself, and certainly the team, if I did not go for it 100%," explains 84-year-old international Van Lunteren. "I want to thank my teammates, the staff and the fans for the wonderful time and the great memories and of course wish all the success of the world on the way to Tokyo and the European Championships 2021."
National coach Sarina Wiegman is surprised by Van Lunteren's decision. "Desiree has become a fixed value for the Dutch team. You can see that from her statistics: she has hardly missed an international match in the past five years. She is such a player that you as a trainer know exactly what you get, she has a great drive and is always willing to give way to the team. "
Van Lunteren remains active for Ajax, the club where she returned last summer after a stay at the German SC Freiburg.
