Launched in 1997, the Mercedes M-Class was the pioneer among European luxury SUVs, although it had lost momentum in recent years. The question comes to solve it, and how, this new generation of a model that, since the mid-decade, is known as GLE .

Very large - it grows to 4.92 meters - the heavy design of the previous model yields its site to a body of spectacular presence and much more in line with European tastes. They only serve for children or, on short trips, adults and slaughter the trunk, obviously. With them hidden, we can already carry suitcases: there are 630 liters to fill. Calling the proven version basic seems like a sacrilege. We talk about the 300d, the diesel addendum that is still ideal for these moles.

Okay, your four-cylinder engine will not have the unctuousness and sound of a six-cylinder, but you have to be very sybaritic to not be content with your thrust (500 Nm torque at 1,600 rpm), with how well it is understood with the automatic change (although there are faster) or with its level of performance spending relatively little for its weight (more than 2,100 kilos). The latter also helps its excellent aerodynamics.

In fact, the biggest hit comes because this mechanic cannot have light hybridization (read ECO label) reserved for gasoline. Not even with the most sophisticated suspension - yes with the pneumatic one - that is ahead of the irregularities of the road. Nor with the off road package that multiplies its 4x4 skills (it is always all-wheel drive).

It is not a criticism of dynamics or comfort, very good with the standard configuration. It is the impossibility of optimizing it taking advantage of the fact that the GLE, demanding a large outlay, has a good price compared to the rivals. The other alternative is to dedicate those euros to enriching the comfort, security or multimedia endowment, which can become dizzy. Because do not forget, this Mercedes has an excellent endowment but, as a good premium , the vast majority of these delicacies are paid separately. And others that are not so much, such as connectivity for Apple or Android.
