Virgil van Dijk is especially happy that the Orange is going to a big tournament for the first time in six years. The captain did not want to dwell on Saturday for too long in the moderate 0-0 tie against Northern Ireland in the European Championship qualification.

"We're going to the European Championship, that's the most important thing. Let's not talk too long about this match," Van Dijk told the NOS in Belfast.

The Orange team needed a draw to qualify for the 2020 European Championship. The Northern Irish fought for their last chance and got the best chances in the first half. Steven Davis scored a penalty.

Steven Berghuis was close to a hit on behalf of the Netherlands, but he hit the bar. "We wanted to win and also had the opportunity to score," Van Dijk looked back. "If we had come to 0-1, then it would be game over immediately."

Van Dijk found the Dutch team strong in the final phase

After the break, the Dutch team hardly got into trouble. "In the last fifteen, ten minutes they start playing very directly and hope for free kicks and corners," Van Dijk looked back. "Then you have to be very strong not to give anything away and we have done that well at times."

"But we shouldn't talk about this game for too long", Van Dijk said again. "Now the focus must be on the European Championship."

On Tuesday, the Orange squad closes the European Championship qualification with a game against Estonia in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
