Rafael Nadal can still hope for a place in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in London. The number one in the world fought on Friday in three sets of lance Stéfanos Tsitsipás, who was already certain of a place in the semi-finals.
The long and equal match in the O2 Arena ended in 6-7 (4), 6-4 and 7-5 in favor of Nadal, who now has to hope that Daniil Medvedev wins later on the day of defending champion Alexander Zverev.
A victory from Zverev means elimination for Nadal, who previously lost to the German. Medvedev is scoreless fourth in the Andre Agassi group and already knows that he can no longer make it to the half-final battle.
33-year-old Nadal has never won the ATP Finals. In 2010 and 2013 he reached the final, but he lost to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
In the Björn Borg group, Dominic Thiem and Federer already qualified for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals. Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini had to go home.
Despite his possible elimination, Nadal is sure that he will end the year as number one in the world. At the age of 33, he is the oldest to lead the ranking at the end of the season.
