The Tokyo Olympic marathon course, which was decided to be held in Sapporo, was examined based on the idea of a round-trip course that goes around the center of Sapporo.

For the Tokyo Olympic marathon that moved to Sapporo, the tournament organizing committee rushed to select courses and schedules in consultation with the competition organizations, local Sapporo city, and Hokkaido.

Among the marathon courses, it was found through interviews with the officials of the tournament that the course of the marathon was being studied based on the idea of a round-trip course starting at “Odori Park” in the center of Sapporo.

According to the people concerned, the circuit course has a narrow range, so there are advantages such as roadside guards, volunteers, and the arrangement of measuring equipment to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

However, there is a plan to make two laps near the half marathon for which course to lap, while the international competition organization that promotes the lap course has one lap distance for reasons of operational efficiency. It is suggested that the shorter course is 4 to 5 laps.

The Organizing Committee will coordinate with international sporting organizations and the local community in the hope that the course will be solidified by the IOC = International Olympic Committee's board meeting in early next month, aiming for approval of the starting and landing points.

The laps of the Olympic marathon are also used in the 2012 London Games and the previous Rio de Janeiro Games.
