Alberto Salazar was the acclaimed coach who led the Nike Oregon Project major effort to develop American medium and long-distance runners. But got to see everything thrown into ruin when it emerged that he manipulated doping controls, used banned methods and made sure athletes got hold of the male sex hormone testosterone. Therefore, he was suspended for four years for drug offenses.

Now new information about maladministration is emerging alongside the doping.

- When I was 16, I got a call from Alberto Salazar. He was the most well-known athletics coach in the world and he said I was the most talented athlete he had ever seen, "Mary Cain told the New York Times and continues:

- I joined Nike because I wanted to be the best in the world.

The 23-year-old, who, among other things, won the junior championship at 3000 meters and finished ten in a World Cup final of 1500 meters, tells how she broke down.

- When I joined, I was told that if I wanted to get better, I needed to get narrower and narrower ... and narrower, she says and continues:

- This was the top team in the country. But there were no psychologists, no nutritional physiologists, it was just a collection of people who were Alberto's friends, she says and continues:

- He was constantly trying to make me lose weight. He weighed in front of my teammates.

She also talks about an incident when she was interviewed by the New York Times as a youngster.

- The New York Times wrote about how Alberto trained me. We didn't do any of that. I felt so scared and so lonely and so cheated and I started to have suicidal thoughts. I started cutting myself. Some saw me cut myself. Nobody did anything about it or said anything.

Alberto Salazar denies Mary Cain's accusations in an email to the New York Times, claiming he always thought of her best.

Nike, which was behind the Nike Oregon Project, has chosen not to comment on the allegations.
