Dutch athlete Madia Ghafour has been sentenced to 8.5 years in jail after Ecstasy and methamphetamine were found worth two million pounds ($ 2.58 million) in her car in Germany, the German news agency DPA reported.

Madia, 27, was arrested at a border checkpoint in Iten in June, where police found 50 kilograms of ecstasy pills and two kilograms of methamphetamine, plus 11,950 euros.

The German news agency DPA reported that the sprinter, who competed with the Netherlands in the 400 meters relay at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, pleaded not guilty to the court and said she believed she was carrying stimulants.

The Dutch Athletics Association said it was shocked by the case and would investigate Madya Gafoor's doping allegations, to find out who was also involved.

"The Athletics Association condemns any use or trafficking of drugs or doping and is fully committed to Dutch doping laws. The case has been referred to the doping authorities to investigate the violation of doping regulations," he said in a statement.

Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa reported that Madhya Ghafour refused to disclose who was taking the drugs and said she feared for her family's safety.
