Raymond van Barneveld has decided on Monday not to participate in the qualification for the Grand Slam of Darts. The five-time world champion therefore has two more tournaments in his farewell year.
52-year-old Van Barneveld made his decision after being stranded on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the World Series Finals in Amsterdam, his last tournament in the Netherlands.
"Raymond did not make it. He had to sit on the plane at 10.00 after a tough weekend this morning and then after a long journey try to qualify himself in Wigan in the evening", his manager Jaco van Bodegom told the ANP .
"And if he was eliminated on Saturday or Sunday during the day, he would certainly have gone. This was getting too restless."
Van Barneveld reached the World Cup with difficulty
Due to his cancellation of the Grand Slam of Darts, Van Barneveld only plays the Players Championship Finals at the end of this month in Minehead and the World Cup in December in London.
Van Barneveld, who fell far back in October, secured World Cup participation by securing a place in the first 32 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit. "It is not des Van Barneveld's to place me this way, but it is as it is," he said.
Van Barneveld announced last December that he will stop playing darts at the end of this year. De Hagenaar can no longer afford to be a pro.
