US President Donald Trump visited the night's star-studded UFC gala in Madison Square Garden with two of his sons.

In the main game he got to see audience favorites Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal make up a specially designed "BMF belt" to decide who is the toughest - who is the sport's "baddest motherf ---- r".

Masvidal tear-started and floored Diaz with an elbow early in the match. The big star at times looked bad, but Diaz, well known for his tremendous stamina, struggled stubbornly throughout the match and seemed to slowly turn up the pace.

Just as the fourth round of five was about to begin, the ring doctor asked to examine a large wound above Diaz's right eyebrow. He then chose to wave of the match which was met by the crowd from the crowd.

Both asked for a return meeting

Masvidal was therefore awarded the victory via technical knockout.

- I'm not the doctor here so don't bend for me. I just told Nate that we need to meet again. UFC, make it happen. It must be a return meeting, Masvidal said afterwards.

Diaz replied directly:

- I'm looking for you. Let me heal a little and we will run again.

UFC President Dana White says his gut feeling was that the doctor's decision was premature, but that he later changed his mind.

- At first I thought the match should have continued, but when I met Nate afterwards and saw him up close, I understood why it was stopped, he says.

Mixed reactions to Trump

Real President Donald Trump - a good friend of Dana White for many years - was greeted by mixed reactions from the crowd in the arena, both cheering and boasting in different directions.

Earlier this week, Trump attended a baseball game in Washington and was greatly boosted while the crowd screamed "Prison him!" (Lock him up).

Hollywood actress Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was in the cage and handed out the unique BMF belt to winner Jorge Masvidal.
