Niko Kovac , hitherto coach of Bayern Munich, was dismissed this Sunday, one day after a painful 5-1 defeat in Frankfurt and after a disappointing October month, the German champion club said.

"Niko Kovac is no longer the coach of FC Bayern," the club said in an official statement, stating that the decision was made between President Uli Hoeness , his right hand Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic , also according to Niko Kovac himself.

"Until further notice, deputy coach Hans Flick is in charge of the team and especially preparing the important games against Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday and against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday," Rummenigge said in the statement. "The actions of our team in recent weeks and their results have shown us that it was necessary to act," he explains to justify the decision. "I want to thank Niko Kovac on behalf of Bayern for his work and especially the double (Bundesliga and German Cup) last season," he said.

Five wins in 10 games

The sports director Salihamidzic asked the team for a reaction: "I now expect from our players a positive attitude and an absolute willingness to do well, so that we can achieve our goals this season." The current champions of Germany have won this season just five of the top ten league games (18 points). It is his worst start in the tournament since the 2010-2011 season and Bayern is four points behind the leader, Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Saturday's 5-1 loss in Frankfurt was the toughest for Bayern in a decade in the national championship, since they suffered in April 2009 in Wolfsburg for the same result. "I think it's the right decision at the right time for the club," said Kovac, who was in the position since last season, when he succeeded Jupp Heynckes. "The results and our game of recent times have led me to this conclusion," he admitted.
