Bulgaria's prosecutors on Thursday indicted an 18-year-old man in connection with racist abuse of England's black players during a Euro 2020 qualifier in Sofia.

England thrashed Bulgaria 6-0 on Monday, but the game was marred by a host of fans who mocked the visitors with Nazi salutes and apes.

The prosecutor's office in Sofia accused the young man of indecent acts, disrupting public order and expressing a lack of respect for society.

The young man was held for 72 hours and prosecutors will decide on Friday whether he should remain in custody pending trial. No date has been set for the trial.

Bulgarian police arrested eight others after the match at the Vasil Levski stadium, which was suspended by the Croatian referee in a three-step UEFA protocol.

UEFA said it had opened a disciplinary investigation against Bulgaria in a number of charges, including racist behavior and dumping of projectiles.
