Bauke Mollema has won the 113th edition of the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday. De Groninger won the 19 kilometer solo.
Mollema kept Alejandro Valverde about twenty seconds behind him. The Spaniard was second in Lombardy for the third time, after he just missed 2013 and 2014. Tour de France winner Egan Bernal finished third.
The 32-year-old Mollema is the first Dutch winner of the Tour of Lombardy since 1981. Then Hennie Kuiper won the final cycling monument of the season.
Mollema is the third Dutchman to prevail in Lombardy. In addition to Kuiper, Jo de Roo won the 'course of the falling leaves'. In 1961 and 1962 he was the strongest in the Italian cycling race.
For Mollema it is the first time that he has won a cycling monument. Earlier in his career, the Trek-Segafredo rider won a stage in the Tour de France, the Clásica San Sebastián and a stage in the Vuelta a España. A little over a year ago he booked his last victory in the Italian one-day race GP Bruno Beghelli.
