Karlström couldn't beat the favorite Toshikazu Yamanishi from Japan. Japan took a reassuring lead early on, which he watched all the way to the finish. Instead, Karlström had to focus on second place. And he looked long enough to be able to take it easy.

But with a few kilometers left, he was tired, and Russian Vasiliy Mizinov took in second by second in the final kilometers. And when it was a kilometer left, he also walked around the Swede. Karlström then looked very tired compared to Mizinov, and the silver medal was lost.

Despite tired legs, he was still well enough to take the bronze, which was the first Swedish World Cup medal on the men's side. In goal Karlström reached 1.27.00, eleven seconds after Mizinov and 26 seconds after Yamanishi.
