The French world champion as well as the world record holder, Kevin Mayer led after seven competitions and had the gold medal in the men's multi-match. But when it was time for pole jumping, it was no longer the favorite.
After a short stint in the first jump, which he tore, he hesitated on the streak for his second jump. Mayer set his pace against the bar, but chose not to jump up, but threw himself in pain on the mat.
