The accident occurred near her hometown Squamish near Vancouver, Canada. Martin was riding a bike trail near a park when the 22-year-old was seriously injured. When the ambulance arrived at the scene, the nurses tried to save her life and she was taken to hospital by helicopter. But her life could not be saved.

- We would like to express our deepest condolences to Christine and James, Mikayla's parents, and to all her family and friends. Mikayla had a deep love for skiing and a passion for skiing that was endless and words cannot express how much she will be missing, says Vania Grandi, president of the Canadian Alpine Association.

Should have competed in the World Cup

Martin began her career as an alpine rider, before switching to the ski cross season 16/17. She won the JVM in Cardrona, New Zealand 2018 and predicted a brilliant future in the sport.

Last season she entered the top 10 in the World Cup twice, where the best place was a sixth place in Innichen. That meant she was eliminated in Canada's World Cup team. Martin would have competed in the World Cup next season.
