• Chronicle: Rap, Lego, Dragon Ball and socks: this is Noah Lyles, new king of 200 meters

All races, like all jumps and throws, are special by different. The special thing about 200 meters is that, in their first half, they run in a curve. This inevitably leads chroniclers to write: "Fulano left the curve ..." And the end of the curve is the first great reference.

Who drew it with the shape and edge of an alfanje was the British Adam Gemili . It was for him the curve of happiness. But after the Briton Noah Lyles entered the line like a saber in the quince flesh. In it he cemented his victory in a somewhat disappointing race and with his worst mark of the year (19.83). The same applies to the Canadian Andre de Grasse (19.95) and the Ecuadorian Álex Quiñónez (19.98). Only they three fell from 20 seconds.

Perhaps for that reason, because of that disappointment in the triumph, Lyles was not abandoned to his fools. For them he has been associated with Usain Bolt , also very fond of gestures. Some of us, perhaps too classic, don't like the gracietas on the track. We prefer serious athletes, who look at that track as loving and hating it on time. Wanting to conquer it and, at the same time, fearing being rejected. Love and hate are two very serious feelings.

Lyles is at 200 what Christian Coleman at 100. The other American owner of world speed. And, although this season has won the Diamond in both distances, partly because Coleman was somewhat disinterested, he is first and foremost a runner of 200. Less in the curve of happiness than in the line of glory.

This year he suffered only one defeat: against Michael Norman in Rome (19.70 by 19.72). And it always went below 20 seconds. His 19.50 Lausanne place him as fourth man "all time", after Usain Bolt (19.19), Yohan Blake (19.26) and Michael Johnson (19.32). In addition, he and Bolt are the only ones who have come down six times from 19.70.

So, with those credentials acquired and, we believe, a bluff character by birth, Lyles has announced that sooner or later he will beat Bolt's record. Arm yourself with patience, kid. Between his best brand and yours there are, at least still, about three meters.

A detail. In the final there was not a Jamaican. Not even the declining Blake, fifth in the 100. Bolt left, which was almost everything, and after him there is almost nothing left.
