Sifan Hassan became world champion in the 10,000 meters on Saturday in Doha. The 26-year-old athlete ensures the fourth Dutch World Cup gold in the history of the event.

Hassan follows in the footsteps of Rens Blom and Dafne Schippers. Polsstok high jump Blom won gold in 2015 at the World Championships in Helsinki, Schippers was twice (2015 and 2017) the best in the world in the 200 meters.

Although it is her first outdoor world title for Hassan, she has already won twice in a World Championship. In 2015, she captured bronze in the 1500 meters in Beijing, two years later a silver medal in the 1500 meters was added in London.

For Hassan, the world title is the highlight of a dream season. She improved the European record on the 3 and 5 kilometers last summer and the world record on the English mile. She also won Diamond League competitions in Zurich (1500 meters) and Brussels (5,000 meters).

Hassan also comes into action at the 1,500 meter or 5,000 meter this World Cup. Because both numbers are finished on the same day (October 5), they will have to make a choice between the two parts.
