Kiki Bertens has reached the second round of the WTA tournament in Beijing with a hard-fought victory. De Wateringse was too strong for Donna Vekic in three sets: 3-6, 6-1 and 7-6 (3).

Vekic - the world's number 23 - and Bertens were on the track in the Chinese capital for almost two hours. The first set was for Vekic, after which the Wateringse in the second set overturned the game and only gave up one game.

In the third set it went right for a long time, so a tiebreak had to be involved. Bertens quickly took a large lead in this and did not give it away anymore.

In her next match, Bertens will play against the winner of the match between the Spanish Caroline Garcia and Dayana Yastremska from Ukraine. Last year Bertens won the eighth finals in Beijing.

For Bertens, her victory in Beijing is a nice boost. The number eight in the world is in a bad shape and needs good results to qualify for the WTA finals, the prestigious year-end tournament.
