Nils Eekhoff lost his world title on Friday with the promises. The Dutch rider was disqualified after the road race in the British Yorkshire because he received a 'sticky bottle' from his team leader.
The 21-year-old Eekhoff was in the sprint of a small group ahead of the Italian Samuele Battistella (second) and the Swiss Stefan Bissegger (third). Due to the disqualification, the gold now goes to Battistella. Pascal Eenkhoorn finished eighth in 38 seconds.
In the road race over 173 kilometers, Eekhoff was in the final part of a chasing group with the Colombian Sergio Higuita, who won a stage in the last Vuelta a España, and the Danish Andreas Kron.
In the final kilometer, the trio joined the four leaders and this septet sprinted for the win. Eekhoff was leading early in the sprint and seemed to be passed by Higuita, but the Dutchman fought back and held on to the finish line.
After the race, the jury met because Eekhoff received a 'sticky bottle' with 124 kilometers ahead. This means that a rider holds a bottle for just as long as he receives it from the following car. Half an hour later, the trainee of Team Sunweb was disqualified.

Dekker remains the only Dutchman with a medal in promises
Eekhoff was the first Dutchman to grab gold at the World Cup road race for promises, which has been on the program since 1996. Thomas Dekker now remains the only Dutchman to win a medal at the road race for riders under the age of 23. In 2003 he took bronze and a year later silver.
Due to the disqualification of Eekhoff, the number of Dutch medals at this World Cup remains at seven. Earlier, the Dutch team took the world title in the mixed team time trial and Anna van der Breggen (silver) and Annemiek van Vleuten (bronze) entered the podium in the time trial.
There was also silver for Enzo Leijnse and Shirin van Anrooij (junior time trial) and bronze for Lieke Nooijen (junior road race).
