The Dutch handball players had a good start on Thursday in the qualification series for the European Championship next year. Austria was beaten 32-24 in Eindhoven.
The Orange had a hard time for a long time, even though it dominated a large part of the game. After a 13-13 score at halftime, the team of national coach Emmanuel Mayonnade, who had to miss Estavana Polman among others, walked out after the break.
Normally placement for the European Championship is not a problem for the Netherlands, which is a favorite in a pool with Spain and Greece in addition to Austria. The first two go to the European Championship.
Greece is the next opponent in Athens on Sunday. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth round are only in March and May next year. The European Championship is in December 2020 in Denmark and Norway.
The European Championship qualifying series is interrupted by the World Cup at the end of this year in Japan, where the Orange squad faces Norway, Slovenia, Serbia, Angola and Cuba in the group stage.
The Dutch handball players have been successful in recent years, as they won silver (2015) and bronze (2017) at the World Cup. The Dutch team also finished on the podium at the 2016 European Championships (silver) and 2018 (bronze).
