Matthijs de Ligt failed to win with Juventus on Wednesday at the start of the group stage of the Champions League. The Italians lost the victory to visit Atlético Madrid in extremis: 2-2.
After a boring first half, Juventus was in the middle of the second half with a 0-2 lead against Atlético. First Juan Cuadrado nicely shot the ball into the top corner and moments later Blaise Matuidi headed in a cross from Alex Sandro.
That was not enough for the win, because Atlético came alongside in the final phase. Stefan Savic (70th minute) and Hector Herrera (90th minute) were both accurate from a resumption of play.
De Ligt was within ninety minutes. The defender, who came over from Ajax this summer, played a decent game and was not blamed for the goals of Savic and Herrera.
Danny Makkelie was the referee in Wanda Metropolitano. The Zuid-Hollander, who also played the top match between PSV and Ajax in the Eredivisie on Sunday, was briefly on the ground after a ball in the face, but was able to continue.
