Basketball World Cup: Spain's top scorer outclass Argentina
In the final of the World Basketball Championship Spain triumphed. Bronze went to France, which had surprisingly defeated the USA in the quarterfinals.
Spain's "Golden Generation" has crowned a world champion basketball gala and destroyed the title hopes of outsider Argentina. NBA champ Marc Gasol's team celebrated a superior 95:75 (43:31) victory in Sunday's final in Beijing. As already in 2006 Spaniendamit secured - as the successor of the failed in the quarterfinals to France USA - the Naismith trophy.
Playboy Ricky Rubio shone in Spain with 20 points and seven rebounds. Marc Gasol showed a complete performance with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The 34-year-old center had won the NBA title in the summer with the Toronto Raptors and is just like the same-age Rudy Fernandez from the 2006 World Champion squad. Since this World Cup triumph, Spain has won nine international medals, including the European Championship titles in 2009, 2011 and 2015.
In front of their legend Manu Ginobili, the Argentines seemed overwhelmed by the immense opportunity on the big stage, allowed themselves easy ball losses and bad qualifications. Spain, on the other hand, made a quick start, distributing the ball, dominating the rebound, and quickly took a 12: 2 lead. Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez tried to calm down his team after just under three minutes with a first break.
One-sided finale after Spanish lightning start
Up to 17 points drew the favorite in the first half. "Spain-wide experience makes a big difference here," commented NBA legend Kobe Bryant. The second half started Spain with a 12: 2 run. In the final section, Argentina came to twelve points behind, but could not make the one-sided final open.
France had secured a medal with 67:59 (21:30) against Australia in the bronze match. Germany finished the World Cup on the disappointing 18th place. It was the worst result of a German team in so far six World Cup participations.
