Laura Smulders won the first of two World Cup competitions in Rock Hill, American on Friday (local time). Among the men, world champion Twan van Gendt finished fifth.

The 25-year-old Smulders, who won silver at the World Cup in July, was just a bit faster than the Russian Natalia Afremova and world champion Alise Willoughby. De Gelderse Judy Baauw, fourth at the World Cup, finished eighth.

Smulders leads the world cup ranking with three more matches. One more game is scheduled in Rock Hill on Saturday. The season finale will follow in Argentina in two weeks.

Among the men, world champion Twan van Gendt had to settle for fifth place. Niek Kimmann, leader in the rankings, stranded in the semi-finals. Joris Harmsen finished eighth.

The profit for the men went to the American Corben Sharrah.
