Valencia, one of the opponents of Ajax in the group stage of the Champions League, has fired coach Marcelino García Toral on Wednesday.

Marcelino was in his third season with Valencia. The 54-year-old Spaniard has been successful in the last two years with twice a fourth place in La Liga. In the two seasons before, the six-time national champion did not get any further than the twelfth place in the final ranking.

Valencia gives no reason for the dismissal in a short statement on the club's site. According to Spanish media, there has been disagreement between Marcelino and owner Peter Lim for a long time, among other things about the purchase and sales policy.

The team of keeper Jasper Cillessen, who came over from FC Barcelona this summer, is in tenth place in La Liga after three games with four points. On Saturday, the team plays an away game against Barcelona.

Valencia is together with Ajax, Lille and Chelsea in group H of the Champions League. The team from Amsterdam will visit Spain on October 2 and play the home match against Valencia on December 10.
