Sam Bennett won the fourteenth stage in the Vuelta a España on Saturday. The Irishman from BORA-Hansgrohe was the strongest after a journey of 188 kilometers and recorded his second victory in this Tour of Spain.
The sprint was marred by a heavy fall in the last kilometer that involved red jersey carrier Primoz Roglic. The Jumbo-Visma rider was in trouble, but seemed to come out of the trap unscathed.
Luka Mezgec, one of the favorites for Saturday's stage in advance, was the biggest victim of the group of riders who crashed. The Slovenian was taken away with an ambulance and had to leave the Vuelta.
Fabio Jakobsen was not bothered by the crash, but at the same time was unable to threaten Bennett. The Dutch sprinter surrendered in the last hundred meters and finished outside the top ten.
The Argentinian Maximiliano Richeze was able to stay somewhat close to Bennett and finished second. Tosh Van Der Sande from Belgium completed the top three.
Nothing changed in the general classification. Roglic retains the red and red jersey and has a big lead of more than two minutes over Alejandro Valverde. The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar is third at three minutes from his compatriot Roglic.
On Sunday, the Vuelta continues with a solid mountain trip over a hundred kilometers from Andorra la Vella to Cortals d'Encamp.
