Samuel Eto'o , the star striker from Cameroon, considered one of the best African footballers of all time, announced Friday night that he is retiring, with a message on his Instagram account.

"The end, towards a new challenge . Thanks to all, big love, adrenaline," wrote the 38-year-old scorer on the social network, with a photo in which he appears in the middle of the darkness, illuminated by a halo.

Eto'o won the Olympic Games (2000) and two African Cups of Nations (2000, 2002) with his team, as well as three Champions Leagues with Barcelona (2006, 2009) and Inter Milan (2010).

After passing through Real Madrid, Eto'o lived his best football moments at Barça (2004-2009) and Inter (2009-2011), before starting a world globetrotter final , with his time in Russia, England , Turkey and Qatar.

Throughout his career, Cameroon scored 359 goals in 718 games , and was selected 118 times, achieving 56 points, according to the specialized Transfermarkt site.

In mid-July, the president of the African Football Confederation (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad, announced that Eto'o and Didier Drogba, a recently retired Ivorian legend, would become his "collaborators," with "official duties."

"Didier Drogba will reflect on the improvement of the status of the African player. Samuel Eto'o will be in charge of relations with federations and confederations," he told a press conference.
