In recent years, the best male skier in the world has been named Marcel Hirscher. Now the 30-year-old puts the skis on the shelf.

During his career, the Austrian has won 68 World Cup competitions, only Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Lindsey Vonn (82) have won more. He is the only skier to win the overall World Cup for eight consecutive years.

"There are a lot of things that underpin this decision," Hirscher said during a press conference.

Hirscher has previously stated that his successes have meant that he cannot have a private life.

"Being able to go out on the street and be nobody at all is something that I really miss sometimes," he told SVT Sport earlier this year.
