Osaka is the reigning champion in the US Open and also won the Australian Open earlier this year. But she will not lift any new US Open cups this year.
In the fourth round, tonight she was knocked out against the world pillar, Bencic from Switzerland, before the eyes of Henrik Lundqvist, who was on the scene in New York's centercourt.
The Swiss clutched the grip from the beginning and won the first two games of the match, which made it possible for her to win the first set by 7-5.
Called doctors
Osaka played in others but was noticeably out of sorts. Among other things, she called a doctor who took a closer look at one of her knees. However, she was able to complete the match and got beaten 6-4 in the second set, where Bencic ended the match by serving home a clean game.
- The challenge can't be bigger, I had to play at the top of my level and I'm happy with how I came out, says Bencic in Eurosport's broadcast.
- I am not a player who does so many serve or is offensive, but I play more like chess and try to anticipate the next step.
Bencic is now in the quarterfinals.
