Rublev's success

For the first time in nine years, with Roland Garros 2010, two Russian tennis players made it to the 1/8 finals of the Grand Slam tournament. Following Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev got to the second week of the US Open. But if the success of the fifth racket of the world was quite expected, then the 21-year-old Russian had to beat the obvious favorite of his match for the second time, in this case, the Australian Nick Kiryos.

The match with the 28th seeding number turned into a battle of innings. For the entire first set, not a single opponent managed to earn at least a break point, and the aces brought them a large number of points, and it was better to give Kiryos the best pass. But when the party went into a tie-break, the Australian suddenly flinched. When Rublev served on the set, Kiryos returned the ball a millimeter from the side line.

The second game was already more hectic - each tennis player already had two break points. But both times they calmly dealt with this danger, again playing the game on a tie-break. Once again Rublev, this alignment was useful. Although Kirios quickly led 4-0, he immediately returned the initiative to the Russians with four mistakes in a row. Even the field of the missed Ace Rublev could easily earn the necessary three points.

In the final set, Kiryos was no longer as inclined to fight as before. Rublev won two dry games on his serve and finally made the first and only break for the entire match, which turned out to be victorious. For the entire match, the Russian made only 14 unforced errors, which became the key to his success.

The next opponent of the 43rd racket of the world will be Italian Matteo Berrettini. The 24th seeded tennis player defeated another Australian Alexey Popyrin in his third round match. Rublev will try to repeat the success of 2017, when he reached the quarter-finals of the US Open. At the same time, he will almost certainly get into the top 40 of the ATP rating following the results of the tournament.

Fine Medvedev

For Medvedev, the sixth game day did not bring anything good. The tournament organizers examined his behavior during the match with Feliciano Lopez and imposed a fine of $ 5 thousand for unsportsmanlike behavior and $ 4 thousand for obscene gesture. Earlier in other matches, Medvedev was punished for various reasons for another $ 10 thousand. Moreover, the amount of the prize that he is rewarded for reaching the fourth round is $ 280 thousand.

Easy victory Nadal

Rafael Nadal easily made it to the 1/8 finals. The Spaniard had a good rest for the match with the South Korean Chun Hyun due to the refusal of the game of Tanashi Kokkinakis, whom he had to meet two days earlier. Nadal confidently outplayed his next opponent, who, like in two previous meetings, did not give a single set.

Jung Hyun had a good run of the second game, in which the ratio of actively won draws and unforced errors was the same as that of the 18-time winner of the Grand Slam tournaments. However, the class of the Spaniard still made itself felt. In the third set, Chon’s game began to affect fatigue - by that time it was already his 13th hour of presence at the Flushing Meadows courts. Nadal gave only two games to the South Korean and went into the fourth round, where he will play with the winner of the US Open - 2014, Marin Cilic. The Croat, in turn, beat John Isner in four sets.

Andujara breakthrough and Zverev tiebreaks

In addition to Rublev, Spaniard Pablo Andujar also became another foolish tennis player who reached the second week of the US Open. But if the Russian already achieved such success, then the 33-year-old tennis player for the first time went so far in the Grand Slam tournament. From 2016 to 2018, he practically did not play due to three operations on his elbow, but in New York he is experiencing a second youth.

Partly, Andujar was lucky that Dominic Tim, whom many saw at least in the quarterfinals, lost already in the first round, and the Spanish tennis player got the potential rivals of the Austrian. In the third round, he met with the representative of Kazakhstan Andrei Bublik and won, allowing his opponent to win fewer and fewer games for the set. Further, Andujar will be confronted by the only Frenchman Gael Monfils left in the grid. He held a five-set marathon with Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

The last couple of the 1/8 finals were Alexander Zverev and Daniel Schwartzman. A German with a Russian surname has already played 14 sets for the entire tournament, four of which were in his last match with the Slovenian Aljaz Beden. At first, Zverev hoped that the game would go quickly, like all previous meetings with him. But leading in the first set with a score of 5: 2, he still lost in a tie-break. In the future, Beden still showed intransigence, but Zverev had enough class to take three games in a row.

Schwartzman became the second tennis player after Novak Djokovic, who spent three fights at the US Open and each of them won in three sets. Another victim of the Argentinean sown at number 20 was the last US representative, Tennis Sandgren.

Tears of Osaka and Goff

The most intriguing match of the day in the women's bracket was the meeting of the first racket of the world Naomi Osaki and the rising tennis star 15-year-old Coco Goff. The American failed to get into the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament for the second time in a row. Goff resisted in the first half of the starting set, but the number of unforced errors she ended up with was pretty high.

Osaka won the first game with a score of 6: 3 and finally finished off her opponent when in one of the following games she recouped from 0:40 in five points in a row. As a result, Goff did not win a single game at all. After the defeat, the American could not hold back her tears, and to cheer her up, Osaka called her opponent for a joint post-match interview. The conversation with the journalist turned out to be so emotional that the Japanese herself burst into tears.

The next test for Osaka, who won 17 matches in a row at the hard slam tournaments, will be Swiss Belinda Bencic. She went into the fourth round without a fight due to the failure of the ill Anette Contaveit. For Osaka, it will be a difficult meeting, as she lost both previous joint matches of the WTA tour.

American surprises

With the departure of Goff, the American sensations of the women's tournament did not end. Kristi Ahn got to the fourth round, who had not won a single match in Grand Slam tournaments before her entire career. The owner of the wild card defeated the champion of Roland Garros Alyona Ostapenko in the 1/16 finals. The Latvian tennis player had a very bad match, for which she made 45 unforced errors and 12 double mistakes. An, too, was not easy - because of a shoulder injury, she had to take a medical timeout in the second set. But still she won with a score of 6: 3, 7: 5 and now she will fight with Elise Mertens from Belgium.

Another surprise for the American public was Taylor Townsend. The 23-year-old tennis player made her way to the main draw through qualification and won the sixth match in a row. In the third round, the 116th racket of the world went to Sorana Kirsta, who was only ten positions ahead of her rival. The American had to play two breaks in the first set, but she coped with this task and took the game, after which she easily brought the match to victory. Townsend never allowed a Canadian of Romanian origin, Bianca Andreescu, who, in turn, stopped Caroline Wozniacki, to meet with one of the former compatriots. Earlier, Townsend knocked out the fourth racket of the world from the tournament to Simon Halep.
