Roger Federer reached the quarter-rounds of the US Open without any problems on Sunday by beating David Goffin in three sets. Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova were surprisingly eliminated in the women's tournament.

Federer finished the Belgian after one hour and twenty minutes. The Swiss routinier was 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0 at the longest end.

Goffin, who was placed at the US Open in 15th position, had another break in the first set, but then he lost his service three times in a row.

In the second set it went evenly to 3-2, but then Federer won no less than nine games in a row and with that also the game. The third-placed Swiss player served much better than his opponent (ten aces to zero) and also beat many more winners (34 to eight)

The 38-year-old Federer is hunting in New York for his 21st Grand Slam victory. In the quarterfinals he faces Grigor Dimitrov or Alex de Minaur.

Between 2004 and 2008, Federer won the US Open five times in a row, but since then he has been unable to win the hard court tournament. Last year, the fourth round was its final station.

Barty surprisingly against Wang

Among the women, Barty and Pliskova flew two high-ranking players from the tournament on Saturday.

Barty went down against Wang Qiang in two sets: 2-6 and 4-6. The number two in the world had to surrender after a small hour and a half at its fourth match point against the Chinese.

The 23-year-old Barty soon returned her service twice in the first set and could no longer make up for the backlog. She was also immediately broken in the second company, after which Wang received two match points in the ninth game. She didn't use that, but a game later she struck on her own service.

Last year Barty, who won Roland Garros earlier this year, also stranded in the fourth round of the US Open.

Konta's best performance ever at US Open

Pliskova was placed third and she did not manage against Johanna Konta. It became 7-6 (1), 3-6 and 5-7 for the British number sixteen on the placement list. The 27-year-old Czech reached the final of the US Open in 2016 and the editions afterwards reached them to the quarter-finals.

Konta has already been in the semi-finals of Wimbledon, the Australian Open and Roland Garros in her career, but she is in the quarter-finals for the first time at the US Open. Her next opponent is Elina Svitolina from Ukraine or the American Madison Keys.

With the elimination of Pliskova and Barty, five players from the top ten of the world ranking have now been eliminated. For Kiki Bertens the curtain fell in the third round against the German Julia Görges and for Simona Halep, Petra Kvitová and Aryna Sabalenka the tournament is already over.

Willams makes no mistake against Martic

Serena Williams, the number eight on the placement list, is still in the tournament. The 37-year-old American reached the quarter-finals on Sunday by convincingly dealing with the Croatian Petra Martic. The 37-year-old Williams was ready in two sets after an hour and a half: 6-3 and 6-4.

The win over Martic was the 99th in Williams' at the US Open. She meets Wang in the quarterfinals, which was surprisingly too strong for Barty. Williams hunts at the US Open for her 24th Grand Slam victory.
