The draw of the group stage of the 2019-2020 Champions League was held in Monaco on Thursday 29 August. Paris Saint-Germain is in Group A and will face Real Madrid, Bruges and Galatasaray. Lyon inherits Group G with Zenith Saint-Petersburg, Benfica Lisbon and RB Leipzig. Lille will face tough opposition in Group H with Chelsea, Ajax Amsterdam and Valencia. Find the full draw.
The 32 teams qualified for the group phase of the UEFA Champions League , vintage 2019-2020, have met in Monaco on Thursday, August 29, as is the custom. It is the Rock that traditionally takes place the draw of said phase. The rulers, the sports directors, and even some players made the trip to the principality to attend the lottery, with a mixture of excitement and apprehension: affordable draw, balanced draw or draw "death"?
Paris finds Real Madrid
Paris Saint-Germain, as champion of France, was the French club least exposed to a difficult draw before the start of the draw. Placed in hat 1, he was sure to avoid the European champions ( Liverpool , winner of the 2018-2019 Champions League, and Chelsea , winner of the Europa League 2018-2019) and the champions of the best European leagues.
The Parisians could still fear falling on Real Madrid or Atlético de Madrid, Spanish giants in the hat 2. The Dutchman Wesley Sneijder, the Czech Petr Cech, recently retired, had the task of shooting the balls and to fix the destiny of each one. And finally, the club of the French capital inherits ... Lyon avoids scarecrows
For the Olympique Lyonnais, the draw would be more complicated than for Paris. The Gones, placed in the hat 3, were certain to fall on at least one European cador of the hat 1 (except Paris, because in phase of groups, the teams of the same country can not fight).
From hat 1, OL finally pulls the club a priori the least dangerous: the Zenith St. Petersburg, champion of Russia in title. It could have been tougher. The men of Sylvinho will also have for opponent Benfica Lisbon, from hat 2. Finally, the third opponent of Lyon will be the RB Leipzig. All are in group G.
Lille, mission (im) possible ?
The Losc, vice-champion of France, is back in the group stage of the C1 for the first time since 2012. The Dogues have entered the draw with the lowest UEFA coefficient among the 32 qualified, and were therefore logically placed in the hat 4. Unsurprisingly, Lille is entitled to a difficult draw.
The Lille are in a group H raised with Chelsea (hat 1), Ajax Amsterdam (hat 2) and Valencia (hat 3). A draw inevitably a bit difficult, but Lille, like Lyon, could have fallen on a harder group. The men of Christophe Galtier will have to sublimate themselves to reach the round of 16, which has not happened to them since 2007.
