The rain fell over New York and forced a break in the US Open.

The game was resumed eventually, and 17-year-old McNally showed no signs of respect or nervousness against big star Wiilliams. She kept up with Williams in the first set. At the score 5-5 she broke Williams serve and could also win the set by 7-5.

The 17-year-old, who wasn't even born when Williams won his first Grand Slam, shocked the former world set at the start of the match.

"Don't know if I've played so late ever"

- She came out and played well and showed no doubt at all. It's so fun to see so many good young players and it's going to be a different game, I don't get the chance to play against that type of player that often, says Williams, who even felt the need to change his game and change serve.

- I am well aware of what is happening on the pitch. I thought I had two other services to test and see how it goes.

And it got better. Two straight sets wins for Williams, 6-3, 6-1 and 37-year-old are now in the third round. Williams is chasing her 24th Grand Slam title, and thus she would rate Margaret Courts as the world's most successful tennis player on the women's side.

The match against McNally was nevertheless of a special character for Williams.

- I don't know if I've ever played this late, I can't even remember what you asked ... I'm not really happy with how I play today. I'll do better, I promise.
