Serena Williams didn't even have an hour to beat the Russian who struggled with injuries and had a difficult season. 37-year-old Williams himself suffered injury problems during the season but went all the way to the final in Wimbledon and is hoping to at least repeat that holding in this year's last Grand Slam.

- The body feels good. I feel good. My back is much better so it feels exciting. This is going to be fun, Williams says.

Sharapova, who has had a declining form curve, has not won a Grand Slam since the French Open in 2014. That same year, Williams won her last title in Flushing Meadows, now she is in search of her seventh US Open title.

Willams faces Catherine McNally in the second round.
