Bologna's players were surprised to learn that their coach, Senisha Mihajlovic, who is treated for leukemia, will lead the team in their first Serie A game against Verona, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mihajlovic, 50, was diagnosed with leukemia six weeks ago but was discharged from hospital to face his team at the Verona stadium.

"The coach told us this week that his condition was not 100% good, so we didn't expect him to come; it was a surprising surprise," said winger Ricardo Ursolini.

"We were very happy and his presence gave us an extra boost. We are sorry that we did not give him a win."

In January, Mihajlovic took over as coach of Bologna, who were battling relegation and led them to 10th place last season in a noticeable shift.

"He gave us the usual lecture before the game. He only lost some weight, but his determination and enthusiasm remained the same."
