• 2018 World Cup.The Iranian Sara's Odyssey to enter a stadium with the men

Iranian women will be able to go to the Azadí stadium, home of the 2022 World Cup qualifier, which will play in Tehran the selections of Iran and Cambodia on October 10.

The vice minister for legal and provincial issues of the Ministry of Sports, Yamshid Taqizade, said Sunday that "women on the 18th of mehr (Iranian calendar, equivalent to October 10) can go to the Azadí stadium to see the qualifier between Iran and Cambodia for the Qatar World Cup, "the official Iranian agency IRNA reported.

The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. local time at the Azadí de Tehran stadium and "women for the first time can watch the official soccer team match" in a stadium, Taqizade said.

Taqizade explained that for the presence of women in the stadiums in Iran "there is no legal prohibition" and that those responsible are in the process of activating infrastructure and preparations for the assistance of women.

In Iran "we do not have gender discrimination," Taqizade insisted and said that in Iran the vision of those responsible is based on "providing the conditions for the success of women."

FIFA had pressured Tehran to authorize the presence of women in the qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup and had warned that otherwise Iran would face consequences.

Since the Islamic revolution of Iran in 1979, led by Ruholá Khomeiní, which established the policy of sex segregation, women have no right to enter the stadiums to watch men play.

For a couple of years a small presence of women has been allowed in some parties in Iran, but always very figurative and by invitation, amid the tug of war between the reformist and conservative sectors of the Islamic Republic.

It is customary, however, for women to try to slip in disguise as men with caps, wigs and even false beards, despite the risk of being discovered and detained by the police.

During these years of prohibition, organizations such as Human Rights Watch have repeatedly urged the Persian authorities to abolish this ban and end discrimination against women in stadiums, and campaigns on the same line of Iranians living in abroad during sports competitions.
