Tallon Griekspoor reached the second round of the qualification for the US Open on Tuesday (local time). Arantxa Rus and Lesley Pattinama-Kerkhove went down immediately in their first game in New York.
After more than an hour and a half, Griekspoor stepped out of the track against Elias Ymer: 7-5 and 6-2. The Swede was less successful with his break chances against the Dutchman, who is 76 places lower on the world ranking list (118 at 194).
The 23-year-old Greek track never participated in a Grand Slam tournament in his career. Earlier this year, he failed in the qualifications for the Australian Open (first round), Roland Garros (first round) and Wimbledon (second round).
For a place in the decisive third round, Greek track competes against the Turk Sem Ilkel. The number 258 of the world settled in the first qualifying round with the Colombian Roberto Quiroz.
Rus and Kerkhove-Pattinama lose
Rus lost to the Bulgarian Isabella Shinikova, who took the lead with 1-6, 6-4 and 6-1. The Dutch was placed seventh in the qualification for the hard court tournament in New York.
The 28-year-old Russian did not qualify for any Grand Slam this year. In her career, she played fourteen major tournaments, with a place in the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2012 being her best result.
Pattinama-Kerkhove was also eliminated in the first qualifying round. The 28-year-old Dutchman lost to Swedish Johanna Larsson in three sets: 3-6, 7-6 (2) and 7-6 (3). Pattinama-Kerkhove played two Grand Slams in her career. Both at the US Open of 2017 and Wimbledon this year, she died in the first round.
On Monday, Richèl Hogenkamp, Bibiane Schoofs and Quirine Lemoine managed to survive the first round of qualifying. They have to beat two more players for a place in the main tournament. Kiki Bertens and Robin Haase have been placed automatically.
