A new barrier-free training facility has been completed at the National Training Center in Kita-ku, Tokyo, in an effort to enhance the para-athlete practice environment shortly before the opening of the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Newly established is a barrier-free training facility that can also use para-athletes. The state has completed the construction of the National Training Center in Kita-ku, Tokyo, with a construction cost of approximately 19.4 billion yen.

The total floor area is over 29,000 square meters with 6 floors above ground and 1 floor below ground.

The hallway is approximately 2 meters and 50 centimeters wide so that athletes using wheelchairs can pass each other with ease. Information on the hall is displayed in Braille on the handrail.

On the 1st to 4th floors, there are courts where wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and Boccia can be shared, and there are also special practice areas such as table tennis.

All of these practice areas are designed with the assumption that para-athletes will be used, with the entrance as a sliding door and no steps.

Takashi Katsuta, Director of JSC = Japan Sports Promotion Center, said, “I want both athletes from the Olympics and Paralympics to use them and produce results for 2020”.

The new training facility is already in operation and the opening ceremony will take place on the 10th of next month.
