Spanish goalkeeper Adrian was without a team two weeks ago and, like many players, is looking for a place to play next season, but on Wednesday he became Liverpool's penalty shoot-out champion to lead him to the European Super Cup at the expense of Chelsea.

The 32-year-old left West Ham United at the end of last season, but his hopes of staying in the Premier League were revived by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp when he chose him to replace Alison Baker.

He was waiting for a season in which he will sit on the bench and take part in some cup matches, but in Liverpool's first league game against Norwich City, Allison suffered a calf injury and Adrian took his place.

He took part in the starting line-up in the Super Cup - the Champions League and UEFA Champions League - and after a 2-2 draw, saved the last penalty shootout from Tammy Abraham to lead Liverpool to the title.

Klopp mimicked Silverster Stallone in the Rocky series and shouted "Adrian" to express his gratitude to his keeper.

"What a story. Stay calm," Klopp said. "I don't think he won a lot (of titles) during his career, so it's good to win. He saved a lot of amazing opportunities. So I'm happy for him. "

"He's not just a great goalkeeper, he has a great character in the dressing room. He spoke louder than me (for his victory) in the intermission break. He deserves it, his performance throughout 120 minutes was extraordinary and his penalty kick was the culmination of his great effort. "

"Where was Adrian when we met Manchester City two weeks ago?"

"The goalkeeper told me the goalkeeper needed some time to get back to his level, but he didn't have time and played a very good game. I don't know when he played his last game, but being ready for this match was incredible."

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was confident the goalkeeper could lead the team to victory.

"I told Adrian before the penalty shoot-out that he could be the champion and did it, so I'm happy for him and for the club," the Dutch defender said.

Adrian admitted that he had gone through a volatile period in recent days.

"Welcome to Liverpool. It was a crazy week but (with my teammates) it was easy to play," he told PT Sport television. "I am very happy the team won the title, happy to play for Liverpool and happy for the fans."

"It was a long game but in the end it was a great conclusion for us."

After his contract with West Ham was forced, according to the newspaper "AS" Spanish to train at his own expense, and began training alone in the team of the Union of Deportivo Andalusia, especially since he was close to his home.

After days of solitary training, Adrian sent a postcard with a cash check to buy sports equipment to thank him for allowing them to use their facilities and keep fit, before the Reds chose him as a replacement.
