Overall, tennis players dominate the list of best-paid female athletes over the past calendar year, according to a compilation made by Forbes.

The magazine's list is based on prize money, salaries, bonuses, sponsorship income and partnerships from June 1, 2018 to June 1, 2019.

During this period, 23-times grand slam winner Serena Williams has raised a total of $ 29.2 million, about SEK 280 million. Of these, 40 million were prize money and the remaining parts were sponsor income and partnerships. In comparison, the world's best-paid male athlete, Leo Messi, raised $ 1.2 billion during the same period.

Eleven first are tennis players

In second place comes the world-mad Naomi Osaka with $ 24.3 million, about SEK 232 million. The 21-year-old Japanese is the only third female athlete ever to earn more than $ 20 million in a calendar year.

Notably, football player Alex Morgan is the highest paid non-tennis player on the list. The striker comes first at a twelfth place with $ 5.8 million in revenue, about SEK 55 million.

The British tabloid The Telegraph reports otherwise a declining trend in women's sports. The wages are falling. On the top ten list, only Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber performed better this year than last year. The rest loses.
