Manchester City's Pep Guardiola spoke of why Algerian star Riad Mehrez was excluded from the team's list during a charity match against Liverpool on Sunday.

Manchester City won the title of charity shield after beating Liverpool on penalties after the end of the game with a 1-1 draw.

Guardiola said Mehrez had called him directly after the final of the African Nations Cup, which ended with the coronation of Algeria.

Mehrez said he wanted to return to his team's training after 10 days of rest and said he wanted to face Liverpool.

Guardiola said the Manchester City medical team did not get full details about the drugs he was having while he was in Algeria.

The Spanish coach decided to exclude Mehrez from Liverpool to avoid any problems if he was subjected to a test of doping.

The Algerian star resumed training with Manchester City last Friday, and Guardiola said he hoped to take advantage of the services of the former Lester City starting from the first encounter in the league against Westham on Saturday.
