Edson Álvarez can make his debut for Ajax on Tuesday in the match against PAOK Saloniki. The Mexican purchase travels with the selection of the team from Amsterdam for the duel in the second preliminary round of the Champions League.
21-year-old Álvarez came over from Club América mid-July. Last week he received his work permit, which allowed him to train for the first time with the Ajax selection, but on Saturday during the Eredivisie match against Vitesse (2-2) he was still in the stands at the GelreDome.
It is possible that Álvarez will play minutes against PAOK on Tuesday, although a few of the 23 Ajax players who boarded the plane on Monday still have to take a seat in the stands in the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki.
Lasse Schöne is not part of the selection, because the Dane is completing his transfer to Genoa these days. The 33-year-old Schöne only needs medical examination at the Serie A club and then signs a contract for two seasons.

Ajax must survive another round after PAOK
PAOK against Ajax starts Tuesday at 7 p.m. and is headed by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic and the return is at 8.30 p.m. a week later in the Joahn Cruijff ArenA.
If Ajax is too strong for the Greek national champion then it must survive a play-off for a place in the main tournament of the Champions League. If Ajax is eliminated then a play-off for qualification for the group stage of the Europa League awaits.
In 2010 and in 2016 PAOK was also an opponent of Ajax in the preliminary round of the Champions League and both times the Amsterdam club went on.
