Manchester City won the Community Shield for the sixth time on Sunday at the expense of Liverpool. The national champion was too strong at Wembley after penalties. Georginio Wijnaldum was the only one who missed.
The penalties were necessary after the game ended in 1-1 after ninety minutes. Like Virgil van Dijk, Wijnaldum was on the pitch near Liverpool for the entire match.
City took the lead after twelve minutes. Raheem Sterling hit the ball from close range after David Silva worked the ball at his feet.
Van Dijk seemed to balance the score halfway through the second half. The captain of Oranje finished the ball from a corner against the other side of the crossbar, after which the ball landed back in the field via the line.
Joël Matip, Van Dijk's partner in the back, still made it 1-1 in the final phase. The Cameroonian headed from a corner hit.

Liverpool then had some great chances to win the game in regular time, but Mohamed Salah met goalkeeper Claudio Bravo twice and saw a header acrobatically taken off the line by Kyle Walker.
Therefore penalties had to make the decision. In it, Wijnaldum was responsible for the only fault, as a result of which City wins the English Super Cup for the sixth time in history.
Earlier in 1937, 1968, 1972, 2012 and 2018, the team, which won both the title and the FA Cup last season, seized the cup.
