The new season of the second Bundesliga has begun. In the opening match, VfB Stuttgart prevailed with a 2: 1 (2-1) against Hannover 96. Both clubs have relegated in the previous season from the First Bundesliga and strive for the re-emergence in the top division. The league kick-off in the duel of the relegated pursued 52,000 fans in the Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz Arena.
After a troubled initial phase, VfB became increasingly dominant. The new coach Tim Walter, who can celebrate the debut with a successful competitive debut, managed to give his team an offensive style of play. In the 29th minute Mario Gómez fired after a cross from Borna Sosa the 1-0 and thus the first goal of the season. Hannover 96 is one of the favorite opponents of the veteran: In the first league Gómez had met twelve times against Hannnover, as often as against any other club.
Only minutes later Daniel Didavi scored after a direct free kick the 2: 0 for Stuttgart (36) With a 2: 1 went into the half-time break after VfB defender Maxime Awoudja in the 39th minute by own goal the first goal for the Hannoveraner lap. In the second half of the game, which had to be delayed because of heavy rain, the Stuttgart could develop even more opportunities. Gómez, Didavi and Santiago Ascacibar forgave but the possibilities to 3: 1. In the 64th minute, the 96-defender Matthias Ostrzolek had a yellow-red card from the square, own goal scorer Awoudja VfB also received in minute 85 yellow-red.
