Account victories open

Svetlana Kolesnichenko became the first world champion in artistic swimming in the history - so from now on officially at the international level is called synchronized swimming, although its essence remains completely the same. The dominance of Russian women in this discipline has remained unchanged. Kolesnichenko didn't expect any other result, except for victory, in the solo program.

25-year-old athlete performed the program under the song Survivor, embodying the image of the heroine of the militants Lara Croft. Her performance was estimated by the judges at 95.0023 points - almost one point higher than in the preliminary swims. For a native of Gatchina, this gold became the 14th in a career - more often, only duet partner Svetlana Romashina and Natalia Ischenko won wins.

The fight in the pool for synchronized swimming, in fact, turned around only for the two remaining medals. Silver got Spaniard One Carbonel, speaking at the speech of Nelson Mandela about the sport. In her collection, this is already the 21st medal of the world championships - in terms of the total, she caught up with the absolute leader of the competition, Ischenko. At the same time, Carbonel won only one victory - in combination in 2009, when the Russians did not compete.

Only two-tenths of the Spaniard were lost by the Japanese Yukiko Inui, who had never before risen to the podium in solo performances. She beat 17-year-old Ukrainian Martha Fedina to score - the youngest participant in the final.

Before the competition, the soloists held a preliminary round in the technical program of mixed duets. In fact, he did not solve anything - all participants automatically went to the final. But the fans had a chance to see once again how in synchronized swimming men compete simultaneously with women.

The best result was again shown by the Russian participants. Experienced Alexander Maltsev with Maya Gurbanberdiyeva scored 91.5878, looking up from their Italians pursuers, Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minizini. Two years ago they became champions in this kind of program. The Russians have not yet won victories in the "technique", only in arbitrary performances.

Silver without a license

The first full-fledged competitive day in diving included three finals at once. First, a set of awards was played in mixed synchronized diving from the tower, in which Russia was presented by experienced Viktor Minibaev and 16-year-old Ekaterina Belyaeva. Together they played only at the Russian Cup, while Nikita Schleicher and Yulia Timoshinin fought for medals in the World Series for the whole season.

But the replacement was successful. The Russians for all five rounds lost only to the Chinese Lien Junjie and Si Yai Jie and won the silver. For Minibaev, this World Cup award was the fourth in a career, and for Belyaeva, who debuted at such a serious competition, she was the first.

“The coaches simply said that we should jump at our level, show the jumps that we are capable of, and then how it will turn out. I myself suggested that Kate try to jump mix. Her coach Svetlana Nikulshina agreed with this proposal, the head coach also agreed. And the first start was successful. Then we were just told to continue training. Katya is a talented athlete, and it seemed to me that we could do quite well, ”said Minibayev to RIA Novosti after the competition.

The next girls came to the pool - participants of the finals in the jumping on the meter springboard. Among the contenders for the medal was the Russian woman Christina Ilinykh, who passed the qualification with the third result. However, she failed two jumps. It threw her into fifth place. The Chinese woman Chen Yiwen won, the second was American Sarah Bacon, and the first bronze for South Korea in diving was won by Kim Soo Ji - earlier only representatives of the DPRK received awards at world championships.

The main event of the day was the competition in synchronized diving from the three-meter springboard among men. In addition to the medals, the troika winners received tickets to the Olympics - in previous disciplines there was no such bonus, since they were not included in the program of the Tokyo Games.

Ilya Zakharov and Yevgeny Kuznetsov, the most experienced duet who won three silver medals at the World Championship and won the long-awaited title two years ago, were to represent Russia in this form. However, their pair had to temporarily disperse: Zakharov had not yet recovered from the operation on the meniscus of the jogging leg - and Schleicher, usually on the tower, became Kuznetsov’s partner.

Although they had already performed together this season, and very successfully, in the preliminary round there was almost a disaster. In the fourth jump, the Russians were so bad that they were outside the first dozen. Miraculously winning a lower score from the French, Schleicher and Kuznetsov still passed to the next stage.

In the final, the Russians performed much better, and two jumps out of six even got the second highest mark among all. But there were a lot of mistakes, mainly in terms of synchronicity, in their performance. Schleicher and Kuznetsov were able, after a failed third attempt to leave the tenth place, but they did not rise above the fifth.

They were left not only without a medal, but without a ticket to the Olympics - they will have to get it in a year at the World Cup, which fell on April, which was very inconvenient according to the competition schedule. Kuznetsov said that he and Schleicher could perform better.

“Ten days before the start we had a gathering, before leaving we were informed that Zakharov was not traveling. There was no shock, because at the beginning of the year he had an operation on his knee, he was recovering very hard, and there was not much time. Were ready for such a development. I think that this is not our maximum, because in training we had more successful attempts at each of the jumps. I don’t know yet what affected the performance, we’ll talk with the coach, ”the TASS athlete quotes.

The victory, the third in a day, was won by the Chinese athletes Cao Yuan and Xie Xiu, who two years ago could not stop Kuznetsov and Zakharov. For their gold they had to fight desperately - they gave a chance to their rivals with an unsuccessful second jump. But the Chinese managed to quickly improve and eventually leave a pair from the UK and Mexico with silver and bronze.

Warm up in open water

The first set of awards was played in open water swimming. Due to the fact that the water area of Gwangju is actively used by ships, the start of the men's 5 km swim was postponed to eight in the morning local time. Many well-known swimmers decided to skip the race to prepare for a ten-kilometer distance - Olympic licenses will be played out on it.

One of the favorites did not miss the race - this is a young station wagon from Hungary, Krishtof Raszowski, who won two gold and one silver at the last European Championship. In the middle of the swim, he tried to create a separation, but returned to the peloton. On the last lap, he made a second attempt to get ahead, this time successful. Rashovski sailed to the finish line first, showing the minimum time in the history of the World Championships - 53: 22.1. He brought 10.1 seconds to Frenchman Logan Fontaine, and this gap was the largest since 2001 - usually the fate of gold medals at five kilometers is determined by one or two seconds.

Kirill Belyaev showed the best result among Russians, who will have to compete for trips to the Olympics in three days with Yevgeny Drattsev. He spent the whole race in the general group and remained in it, having failed to compete for medals. Belyaev finished eighth, losing 3.1 seconds to bronze medalist Eric Hedlin from Canada.

“The conditions here are excellent. The water is of ideal temperature, the air temperature is also the most optimal, from the hotel to the start you can walk. The only thing I don’t really like is the start at eight in the morning. We have to get up very early in order to have breakfast and go through all the prestarting business. Today everything could be much better, I made a mistake on the last straight. In general, the whole distance, I felt good and confident. The main goal is still to come. I hope and believe that everything will work out, ”said Belyaev after the race.
