For Djokovic it was the first victory in the sixth final at the endowed with 6.3 million dollar hard court tournament in the US state of Ohio. "It's a very special moment to be here for the first time with the trophy here in Cincinnati," said Djokovic. "My career has been a roller coaster ride, with injuries, time out and an operation in the spring, playing again at this level seems almost unreal".

Last year, Djokovic had not made it past the quarter-finals in any of the four Grand Slam tournaments. This year he already triumphed at Wimbledon - and now the Serb has won the last major tournament before the US Open (27 August to 9 September).

For Djokovic it was also the 24th success in the 46th duel against Federer. "Congratulations to Novak, he has made history," said the Swiss after the match: "He can be very proud, not just about the win today, but on his entire career."
