In March 2017, a high school mountaineering student was involved in an avalanche during mountaineering training at Mt. Chausu in Nasu Town, killing a total of eight people, including seven students and one teacher.

Five years after the accident, we learned from interviews with high schools that a memorial monument will be set up at the prefectural Otawara High School, where eight people were enrolled, in order to prevent the accident from weathering.

According to the high school and the prefectural board of education, the memorial monument is about 1 meter 10 cm long and 1 meter 60 cm wide, and is engraved with "I will never forget the Nasu avalanche accident" and will be installed on the lawn of the high school. ..

Some of the bereaved families have long requested the installation of a memorial monument, and the high school side and representatives of the bereaved families have been discussing the wording to be engraved.

The memorial service was held near the site until last year, but with the installation of the memorial monument, this is scheduled to be held at Otawara High School.
